Taylor Sheridan’s Landman Season 2 returned with nearly 10 million viewers on Paramount+, and its success is encouraging Sheridan fans to check out one of his most underrated movies. In 2018, Sheridan returned to the world of Sicario with Sicario: Day of the Soldado, the action sequel starring Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro. The film continues the story of the escalating drug war between the U.S. and Mexico. In America, Sicario: Day of the Soldado is streaming exclusively on Starz, but globally, the film recently hit Netflix, where it’s charting in the top 10 in more than 10 countries around the world.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado came at a time when movies didn’t cost quite as much to make as they do now. The movie cost Lionsgate only $35 million to produce, meaning that its $75 million box office total was enough for it to turn a profit. The film earned mediocre and forgettable scores of 62% from critics and 66% from audiences, which fall well below the 91% and 85% scores held by its predecessor. Emily Blunt and Daniel Kaluuya did not return for Sicario 2, but the film did cast Isabela Merced in a leading role.

After sci-fi savant Denis Villeneuve directed the first Sicario from Sheridan’s script, Lionsgate recruited Stefano Sollima to direct the sequel. Sheridan has confirmed publicly that the studio wasn’t happy with his creative process on the movie, which came as a result of his reclusive behavior when writing the script. Sheridan told the executives he was going home to his ranch in Texas to write the movie, and he’d hand in his final draft when he was ready.

Taylor Sheridan Is Working on Another Sicario Movie

Fans have been waiting for a third Sicario movie for years, and Josh Brolin recently confirmed that Sheridan is writing the script for another installment in the franchise. He let this spill while on the press tour for his new horror hit, Weapons, which is now streaming on HBO Max. It may be a while before Sheridan gets to a place where he can prioritize Sicario 3, though. He’s hard at work on a new action movie, F.A.S.T., and he’s been tapped to write the script for the Call of Duty movie in the works at Paramount.

Be sure to watch Sicario: Day of the Soldado on Starz in America or Netflix globally and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
