The Season 1 finale of the Jensen Ackles-led Prime Video action-thriller, Countdown, aired two weeks ago. Throughout the thirteen-episode season, the show has consistently remained in the top three most popular shows week-to-week on the streamer’s chart. Despite negative reviews and stiff competition from new entrants like Butterfly and cultural juggernauts like The Summer I Turned Pretty, the show held strong.
However, this is no longer the case. Countdown has been descending the chart, which ranks the ten most popular shows. It is currently at number five after being overtaken by three shows: The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, The Girlfriend, and Gen V Season 2. That’s not the only troubling thing. Countdown has not been renewed for Season 2, and the chances continue to become slimmer with every passing week.
“I’m feeling good,” creator/writer/showrunner Derek Haas said in an interview sometime when the season was airing. “I haven’t done streaming before, so kind of all of the analytics are new. It’s different from when I was doing network and you knew the next morning, like, oh, this is doing great, whatever. But I’m excited because it feels like we continue to pick up viewers every week and so that gets me all excited,” he added.
‘Countdown’ Is Not Done Yet, as Far as Derek Haas Is Concerned
The Season 1 finale left several stories hanging, and Haas knows how they will be resolved if the show gets another chance. “I would pick it back up there [in the finale scene]. I want to pick up in that moment because we also have Shepherd’s (Violette Beane) sister on life support after ODing. There are a few cliffhangers going on that I do want to resolve in the first 10 minutes of the new season if I get that chance,” he told Collider’s Christina Radish. As for what the future holds, Haas explained, saying,
“And I’ve already told Amazon what I want to do if we got another season. So, yeah, I know. I will say, sometimes on [previous] shows, we would write it having no idea what we were going to do, going into the next season. But I had thought about this one already. Sometimes you do write yourself into a corner, so to speak, and if it takes you a while to figure out how to get out of it, that makes for a better writing experience and viewing experience. If it takes you three weeks to figure out what you’re going to do, the audience isn’t going to be able to figure it out in the moment, and that’s exciting.”
Countdown is streaming on Prime Video. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
